A sore throat is a painful and dry feeling in the throat.
Pain in the throat is one of the most common symptoms of sore throat. Most sore throats are caused by infections, and environmental factors.
Although a sore throat can be uncomfortable, it’ll usually go away on its own.
Causes of Sore Throats
However, causes of sore throats range from infections to injuries.
1. Colds, the flu, and viral infections
Viruses cause about 90 percent of sore throats. Among the viruses that cause sore throats are; the common cold, influenza (the flu), measles, chickenpox and, mumps
2. Strep throat
Bacterial infections also cause sore throat, one of which is strep throat; an infection of the throat and tonsils caused by Streptococcus bacteria.
Strep throat causes sore throat in children.
When there’s a reaction between allergy and the immune system, pollen, grass and pet pander are triggered releasing chemicals that causes nasal congestion, watery eyes, nasal irritation and sneezing.
Excess mucus in the nose, also, can drop the back of the throat
4. Dry air
Dry air can suck moisture from the mouth and throat, leaving them dry and scratchy.
This mostly occur during the dry winter months when the heater is running.
5. Smoke and chemicals
Many chemicals in the environment irritates the throat including cigarette and other tobacco smoke, air pollution, cleaning products and chemicals.
Any form on injury on the neck, such as hit or cut can cause pain in the throat. Getting a piece of food stuck in the throat can also irritate the throat.
The vocal cords and muscles are then strained when repeatedly used. It is easy to get a sore throat after yelling, talking loudly, or singing for a very long time.
7. Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus.
The acid burns the esophagus and throat, causing heartburn and acid reflux — the regurgitation of acid into your throat.
A tumour of the larynx(voice box), throat or tongue is a less common cause of sore throat. When a sore throat is a sign of cancer, it stays for a long period of time.
