What is Hepatitis ?

Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver, commonly caused by viral infection, though there are other possible causes of this disease.

These are autoimmune hepatitis and hepatitis that occurs as a result of drugs, toxins, medications etc.

Autoimmune hepatitis is a disease that occurs when the body makes antibodies against the liver tissue.

The liver performs critical functions that affects metabolism, such as  bile production, filtering of toxins from the body, breakdown of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, activation of enzymes, excretion of bilirubin etc.

Funnily enough, not many people actually know that they have hepatitis, nonetheless many people are living with chronic hepatitis B and C.

Treatment options depends on which type of hepatitis you have as we  have hepatitis A, B, C, D, E. Some forms of hepatitis can be prevented through immunization and lifestyle precautions.

An individual that has chronic infectious forms of hepatitis, say, hepatitis B or C may probably not have symptoms in the beginning.

It may even not appear till a lot of damage has been made to the liver.

Symptoms of acute hepatitis

They include;

  • Fatigue
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • dark urine
  • Pale stool
  • Abdominal pain
  • loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • yellow skin and eyes, which may be signs of jaundice

These signs and symptoms may be too subtle to notice because chronic hepatitis develops slowly.
