Sickle Cell Retinopathy :Understanding your eye health
Sickle Cell Disease is the most common genetic disorder that affects the blood. It caused by mutant haemoglobin which causes red blood cells to become ‘sickle’ shaped in low oxygen tension.  

     very common amongst Africans,The sickle red blood cell causes periodic episode of pain called crisis and many other complications that can lead to death. 


However one of the most neglected complications of Sickle Cell Disease is Sickle Cell Retinopathy which  can lead to sudden permanent vision loss without any noticeable symptom at the onset.

In a bid to commemorate the celebration of  World Sickle Cell Day 2020 (19th of June), The R.E.T.I.N.A Initiative and Sickle Cell Aid Foundation organized an online program tagged “Sickle Cell Retinopathy – Understanding your Eye Health” in order to increase awareness about Sickle Cell Retinopathy. 
The program which was held on Zoom platform featured the presence of Dr. Tunji Oluleye, Babatunde Bale, Amarachi Esonwune and Yombo Pitan. The session was moderated by Elmer Aluge and it lasted more than 1 hour. 

Mr. Yombo Pitan (YP) is a sickle cell warrior that has experienced Sickle Cell Retinopathy which he lost his left eye to it. He shared his experience about the condition and encouraged many other sickle warriors like him to be cautious of their eye health.
   
Dr. Tunji Oluleye discussed about Sickle Cell Retinopathy, its prevalence in Nigeria especially in the South West and its preventive measures. Babatunde Bale shed more light about the symptoms of the conditions, management and susceptible genotypes . Amarachi Esonwune round it up by sharing tips on the maintenance of good eye health in order to prevent Sickle Cell Retinopathy.

At the end of the session, over 40 attendees of the program gave their feedback about the awareness program and also asked questions that were answered by the speakers.
